The Senior Veteran’s Benefits Counselor assists in the day-to-day operations of the Veteran’s Benefits Team in the Student Financial Services Unit. The primary focus is support (phones, emails, and work queues) and providing support to the Assistant Director of Post 9/11 Benefits. Additionally, this position may also be responsible for various processing requirements. This is a full-time hybrid role with a minimum of two required days at Excelsior's home office of 7 Columbia Circle, Albany, NY, with the remainder of the days worked from home.

Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Primary on phones to counsel students.
  • Primary on all assigned work queues, email and message center communications.
  • Support the collection of required documentation and processing of forms related to Veteran’s Benefits.
  • Show competency in Institutional policies and procedures.
  • Keep current on regulations pertaining to programs administered by Excelsior University.
  • Serve as an information resource for students and continue to support them through graduation.
  • Assist with developing, revising, and updating processes of the unit related to programs administered by the University.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Stay current with knowledge and use of databases required for workflows.
  • Assist with Purchase Order Processing for Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment.
  • Support military invoicing processing.
  • Timely and accurate posting of payments from the military and Department of Veteran’s Affairs.
  • Research, prepare and post 9/11 payments.
  • Perform adjustments to student and third-party accounts.
  • Assist with VA or military problem payments. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned in support of the needs of the unit and the students we serve.

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution required.
  • 2 years in higher education or related field required.
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail and sound problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, percentages. Ability to apply concepts of fractions, percentages, and ratio to practical situations.
  • Bachelor's degree and experience with veteran students preferred.

The hiring salary range for this position is $44,000.00 - $48,000.00. The hiring salary range above represents the University's good faith estimate at the time of posting.
