The successful candidate will work as a member of the Data Science Center of Excellence that drives decision-making, continuous institutional improvement, and student success. The Data Scientist/Junior Data Scientist role will be primarily responsible for developing, testing, implementing, and maintaining machine learning models that facilitate and improve the operations of student-facing departments. In addition, the role will get chance to participate in projects related to data platform and information system transitions. This position reports directly to the head of Data Science Center of Excellence.

This position is based out of the university’s home office in Albany, NY with the option of considering remote candidates. Remote employees will have mandatory occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and professional development opportunities. Remote employees are expected to be available during work hours 8:30am – 5:00pm Eastern time. The University will supply necessary equipment to perform the essential functions of this job (e.g., laptop, docking station). Employees are responsible for having a workspace where they can participate in virtual meetings without multiple interruptions and noise.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Specific duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop, implement, and revise predictive and other statistical/analytical models to facilitate productivity, efficiency, and student success.
  • Develop analytical solutions that can be scaled and deployed to enable business users at various levels to improve their work effectiveness.
  • Explore, Transform and Combine data from university systems and public source and use them to solve statistical, machine learning, and data mining problems.
  • Communicate model output and analytical insight with intuitive data visualization and reporting tools.
  • Partner with institutional research and business analytics teams on projects requiring interdisciplinary knowledge and skills.
  • Cooperate with other analytics teams to engage customers with data science solutions.

  • BS/MS in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering Management, or a related quantitative field.
  • Must have two years of analytics experience with: R/Python, SQL, visualization tools (Power BI, Qlik View/Sense, and Tableau), and Machine learning models.
  • Passion about using analytics and data to make an impact on Higher Education.
  •  Enthusiastic and demonstrates care about the success of adult learners.


The hiring salary range for this position is $73,000.00 - $89,000.00. The hiring salary range above represents the University's good faith estimate at the time of posting.
